Organisational Transformation and Partnership

New challenges demand organisations that are well equipped and structured to tackle them effectively. Meet Karen

Senior Leader in Climate Resilience

I specialise in financing, developing, and delivering impactful climate adaptation solutions, and in driving the organisational change that allows adaptation action to succeed.

My >15 years experience spans, among other roles, serving as Head of the Urban Resilience Lab at KfW Development Bank, where I developed a €2 billion portfolio of transformative climate adaptation projects across Africa, Asia, and Latin America and established a new form of cross-sectoral, cross-regional collaboration. Leading teams at GIZ and a leading European consulting firm, I implemented projects in fragile contexts: I turned around under-performing projects, and successfully tested innovative approaches that are now replicated across continents, strengthening resilience among the most vulnerable populations in highly exposed regions.

As an senior advisor at adelphi, I advised national governments, UN organisations, and INGOs on effective adaptation strategies across Europe, Africa, and Asia, and founded and headed the divisions on urban climate adaptation and disaster risk management and early warning, substantially growing the portfolio and acquiring new clients. This practical experience is sharpened by a strong scientific grounding, including a PhD on climate adaptation in cities in the Global South, an expert reviewer role for the UNFCCC, and evaluating research proposals for the European Commission.

I build on a track record of advising institutions on the organisational change needed to deliver at scale and sustain results long after a project ends, building the structures, competencies, and collaboration required to make this happen. Clients profit from my experience in having guided international development and investment banks in turning new strategic goals and shifting market developments into more effective internal collaboration. Through partners such as DSR & Partners, my expertise now extends to industry players and commercial banks navigating similar change.
